Migraine Remedies - Finding Your Trigger

Migraine remedies can help to reduce the frequency and pain of a migraine but the best method is to prevent the migraine from occurring in the first place. A common cause of migraines is sensitivity to certain foods. Many different foods have been reported to be migraine triggers including cheese, alcohol, chocolate, yeast, mono sodium glutamate, nuts, citrus fruits, dairy products, caffeine and more. Avoiding the trigger can be a big help in preventing your migraine attacks but sorting out which of the many foods that cause migraines is your own particular trigger is not easy.

Keeping a Food Diary

What is the best way to determine your migraine trigger? The best way is to keep a diary of everything you eat and when you ate it. In a notebook write down the food you eat, the time you ate it and any symptoms you may experience. You might want to use a page each day with three columns for the food, time and symptoms.

It may take some time to be able to correlate foods with the onset of a migraine. Be careful not to blame a food from one attack. Only if you experience an attack after eating a food three times can you start to suspect that food is the culprit. It can also be complicated by having more than one trigger. Once you have identified a possible trigger eliminate that food from your diet and see if the frequency of your migraines decreases. If you still experience migraines it may not be the trigger or there may be more than one trigger.

As you can see finding a possible migraine trigger and eliminating it is not easy or fast. You may already suspect some foods so that may make it easier. However if you can find your trigger foods and eliminate them you will be able to decrease or even stop migraine attacks completely.
